Body Mass Index & Riding
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure for human body shape based on an individual's mass and height. As it relates to horseback riding, as a rider's BMI increases, their center of gravity gets higher, thereby reducing the rider's ability to stabilize themselves in the saddle. Because horseback riding is a physical sport, it is critical that we evaluate each rider's BMI when determining if he or she can safely negotiate the trail. Physical fitness is one of many factors that determine your ability to safely participate. We reserve the right to decline service to any individual that, in the opinion of the management, cannot be safely accommodated.
Fully clothed, the BMI can not exceed 34 AND rider's maximum total weight may not exceed 220 lbs (or 260 for a draft horse). We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. These restrictions are for the safety and comfort of our guests & our horses and are in no way meant to cause embarrassment or ill will.
Call us for special considerations.
we do understand BMI does not account for every situation. if you feel you are above the standard BMI guideline and are fit and balanced to ride please contact us.

Our horses are plow reined only, They do not understand neck reining as we use our draft horses for pulling our sleighs/wagons and use one set of instructions for our trail rides.
How do I plow rein?
You will use both hands to loosly hang on to your reins while riding ( you dont want to keep a tight rein)
Right for Right - Left for left
To turn right, you will gently ( no jerking or yanking) pull the right rein with your right hand back toward your hip area.
To turn left, you will gently ( no jerking or yanking) pull the left rein with your left hand back toward your hip area.
STOPPING or slowing down
you will say "Whoa" and pull back evenly and gently ( no jerking or yanking) on both reins toward your Belly/Hip area ( DO NOT pull the reins back above your head)
Once the horse stops - dont keep pulling back on their reins or your horse will start reversing
How to Go
1st you will do a click or kiss , 2nd if your horse does not move off the click or kiss you will nudge/kick their side/belly with your heels.
When your horse starts moving stop giving them the signs to go. Do not continue to click, kiss, nudge or squeeze their sides. This will ask the horse to go faster and we do not want them to go above a walk.
Even if your horse is going slow DO NOT ask them to trot.
We ride single file, Do not pass on the trail
